Majda Gama
I’m looking forward to working with Majda on our July 7, Café Muse program at the Writer’s Center and in Zoom. In case there is anyone who is unfamiliar with her work, I thought it might be helpful to make up a highlight reel of her several outstanding online performances.
Let’s start with Majda’s appearance here on Everyday Poet with her signature poem, Countries Yet to Exist. It was a pleasure hearing Majda read and talking with her about her new book of poems, In the House of Modern Upbringing for Girls. Here’s a linkback to our conversation: Majda Gama on Everyday Poet.
I am fortunate to have worked with Majda over the years as a member of our writing workshop, The Surrey Street Poets, so it was great to have Majda in our Surrey Street collection of poems, 50 Years of the Moose. Here’s a link to her reading from the collection at the Writer’s Center. Stay for more if you like our celebration of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Elizabeth Bishop’s poem, The Moose.
It is quite an honor to be asked to appear on Grace Cavalieri’s “The Poet and the Poem.” Here’s a wonderful session with Grace from last year during which Majda was at her lyrical best.
Let’s wind things up with Majda’s wonderful reading two years ago for Café Muse Online along with Alina Stefanescu. Fans of David Keplinger, and there are many, will appreciate his introduction of Majda.
So now everyone is prepared and forewarned for an experience of lyrical and emotional depth from one of the best poets on the poetry scene today. Check out the link and promotional materials below for more information.
Writer in a Storm
I had to cut my Substack short this week because of a monster storm that went through our neighborhood last night and knocked down a neighbor’s tree! So this morning I find myself in the local library as an internet refugee! It’s probably going to be a couple of days before things get back to normal on our block.
I have long tried to treat these modern troubles with a healthy dose of gratitude for the astonishing times we actually live in. Here is a video poem Blackout that considers the dark side of our technology wrapped world.
Blackout was selected by the Southern Humanities Review as a finalist in the 2018 Jake Adam York Witness Poetry Contest. That’s my brother Jeff making the musical backing track.
