Two Poem of Reflection from All the Men Came & Danced
Just last week, I received my copy of the the two volume poetry anthology, All the Women Came & Sang, All the Med Came & Danced. Among the many terrific poems I found two poems that use a light touch to look at the surprising way we appear to ourselves and others. So I put them together and gave them am audio reading.
Stared At by Hiram Larew
Hiram’s poem reflects on the notion of personal identity in a world without mirrors. Take a listen:
Want more? Hiram Larew will be appearing at Café Muse at the Writer’s Center on Monday, April 7, 2025 (see details below).
My Hair Turned 72 Today
Stared At draws an interesting comparison with one of my own poems in the Anthology, My Hair Turned 72 Today. Again with a light touch, this poem asks: who are we under all those styles and lengths of hair?
Parting Shots
Last Saturday I had the opportunity to attend a gallery talk given by Fred Folsom at American University’s Katzen Arts Center. His exhibit of nudes, Women Smoking, was celebrated along with his Last Call series depicting the after midnight life at a D.C. Go-Go bar. Looking for a visual adventure this spring? Get thee to the Katzen Center, the exhibit runs until May 18.
What I love about Folsom’s work is the tender obsession with the details of being alive, even on the seedy side. The raw realism catches us as humans, making our way in the often bizarre world in which we have found ourselves.

During the talk, Folsom acknowledged his debt to 17th Century Dutch painting so when I stopped by the National Gallery this week, I thought of Jan Steen’s Dancing Couple as a point of comparison.
Party on, all of you who drink wildly from the cup of life.
