Poets do not shy away from subjects involving human carnage and social injustice. Nor should we turn our backs on our treatment of animals. My poem The Secret Suffering which takes up contemporary factory farming just appeared in the Spring 2024 issue of Allium, a Journal of Poetry and Prose. Here is the poem and a video reading. It is brutal, but so too is what we do to these animals.
I’d like to thank the English and Creative Writing department at Columbia College Chicago for publishing the poem and I hope it helps raise our consciousness of the suffering we inflict by factory farming.
