What Remains
After Emotional and Environmental Loss
The question implied in the title of Janice Booth’s new book, What Remains can be asked of many things in this perilous time: What remains of higher education? What remains of the rule of law? What remains of the White House? The list goes on. Today we’ll visit with Janice and talk about her book of physical and emotional loss set against the wonders of the natural world. I follow that up with a video poem of my own. It’s based on my contribution to the installation Anthropocene Visions and Voices which is coming to the Wavery Gallery on Sunday for a run until November 22, 2025. Loss of species habitat is the concern of that work.
Signature Poem: Janice Fuhrman Booth
I enjoyed my interview with Janice Booth last week discussing What Remains and her reading of her poem Crossing the Bridge Again. The poem is so packed with wetland imagery, you can almost smell the tide and hear the sound of gulls. Come, join us for a quick couple of minutes.
Anthropocene Visions and Voices: This View
So how do you fold art with science while holding the combined moment of artist, spectator and subject? That’s how I saw the challenge of writing an ekphrastic poem based on one of the many excellent works on display as part of Anthropocene Visions and Voices, an installation opening Sunday at the Waverly Gallery.
Here’s the text of the poem.
I encourage everyone to check out Anthropocene Visions and Voices. See Coming Up below for more information.
